Before you start — important
- Save any open work (documents, email drafts, etc.).
- Plug the laptop into power or dock, make sure device stays connected throughout the update.
- Make sure you’re connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or cable).
- Close other programs if you can (makes install smoother).
A - Check whether Dell Command | Update is already on the PC
- Click the Windows (Start) button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Type Dell Command Update into the search box.
- If you see Dell Command Update in the search results, it’s installed, open it. If you don’t see it, follow section B to download and install it.
B - If it’s not installed: how to download & install
- Open a web browser.
- Go to Dell’s Drivers & Downloads page and search for Dell Command | Update. The link to the site: Dell Command | Update | Dell UK

On the page, scroll until you see “DCU 5.5 for Computers with Intel or AMD Processors.” It is very important that you choose this section only. Under it, click on: Dell Command | Update Windows Universal Application.

After clicking it, you will be taken to another page.
At the top there will be a large section "Recommended" asking for a Service Tag - skip this and scroll slightly down and click the blue “Download” button found underneath the file details. - When the file finishes downloading, double-click the downloaded file and follow the installer prompts: Next → Install → Finish. The installer may ask to restart the computer, allow it, if asked.
C - How to check for updates (once it is installed)

Open Dell Command Update (Windows → type Dell Command Update → press Enter).

On the main screen click the Check button. It will scan your PC and show a list of available updates (BIOS, firmware, drivers, apps).
- Wait while it finishes scanning, this can take a few minutes.
D - How to install the updates

After the scan completes, you’ll see a list of updates.
Click Install (or Download and install) to begin. Dell Command | Update will download each update and run the installation automatically.

If the list includes a BIOS update or system firmware update, Dell Command | Update will show a notice or warning message.
- This is normal, and the computer will need to restart to complete the update.
- After the restart, the computer may take a few minutes to finish the BIOS update before Windows loads again.
